The Norelvan political scene is active, albeit rather linear and sometimes considered stale or superficial. Given the nation's history and current government, only a few parties hold major power in the Council, while others occupy a certain niche. Nevertheless, elections are free and citizens are allowed to vote between any party they wish. The currently active ones are listed here.
Progress and Honor
Some time after the Scorching, Progress and Honor was founded by students and workers to counteract the rise of pro-monarchy movements and promote the values of progress, diversity, democratic rule and welfare. Focusing on local assemblies and coordinating with workers' unions, P&G managed to rally the average Norelvan under their cause and make their voice heard to the then broken down Council.
Following restoration and reconstruction, the party found itself at the top of electoral list and waging unprecedented support by the citizens. Nowadays, most workers tend to vote for P&G, which has advocated for workplace reforms, civil rights, and has generally fought for a higher quality of life. The party holds roughly 45% of the Council's seats.
Moderate Center
Considered as a middle ground between the sometimes extremely progressive P&G and the conservative Old Blood and Reformationists, the Moderate Center is mostly made up of middle class citizens, small business owners, or simply those who couldn't see themselves in the other parties. Boasting a centrist, impartial view of national politics, MC frequently takes such neutral stance during debates and proposals for legislation. It has garnered attention as a surprisingly competent centrist group, which sometimes finds itself as the moderator between fervent discussions between conservatives and progressists.
Founded during the Quiet Years shortly after the establishment of the legislative, it was made up of nobles who agreed with democratic reforms and other more privileged members of society who wished to advocate for the lower classes. Nowadays it has evolved into a moderate, though sometimes apathetic proper center party. It currently holds about 25% of Council seats.
Old Blood
An ancient and well established conservative party mostly made up of higher caste citizens, older nobles and wealthy individuals. Previously regarded with respect as a moderate group, it has since evolved into a bitter minority that frequently threatens to block legislation and cause havoc. Two members of Old Blood have been banned from the party and the Council following an attempt on the life of the P&G Chairman in 539.
At its founding hundreds of years ago, when it was named the Guild of Guilds and was a mere association, it served as a collective of merchant and guild owners with the prospect of representing the will of their corporations and workers, but after the establishment of a proper legislature in 250 and with the reforms that pushed corporates and business owners away, it found itself with drastically less representatives and took on a path of revenge against the Council. It currently only holds about 15% of the Council's seats.
Norelva Communist People's Party
An unpopular but lively and active political group, the NCPP was founded as a reactionary force to the Old Blood and Reformation parties, mostly by workers and students right after the Scorching. Incited by the (still active) dwarven commune of Jarmein and Rokran dwarves, founding members initially collected in small groups and waved banners holding up a black hammer. They rallied against Old Blood meetings and occasionally vandalized party members' houses, leading to some arrests, but eventually the group settled and became a proper political force.
Mostly made up of blue collar workers, academics, philosophers and artists, it remains an extremely fervent, if not at times violent, political group. Despite only holding 12% of Council seats, NCPP rallies frequently attract large crowds and are noted to be passionate and overwhelmingly positive.
Royal Reformation Party
This extremely unpopular and ancient party, publicly denounced by the king on several occasions, prides itself on anti-democratic and pro-monarchy opinions. Mostly made up of elderly nobles and extremely wealthy people, who benefitted from a lack of democratic rule and reform, it only holds 3% of Council seats and is only technically a legal party. During most Council sessions, the RRP will remain silent and vote against whatever measure is being taken. Having voted against legislation on 97% of occasions, the party's purpose is often questioned by other Councilors. Their motto, "Save the Crown, Save the Kingdom" is frequently used as a joke against them with statements such as "Save the Crown, Save the Funding" or "Save the Votes."
