Some families have remained present throughout the kingdom's evolution, since the founding of the city on the river by Elias Noret. These were either blood families or groups of likeminded beings with specific concerns. As the kingdom was founded and grew, they received shares of the land by the monarch and became vassals, entrusted with the control of certain industries or cities. Following the Spellplague, and then the War, only six of the Houses remain while others died out entirely or became irrelevant (e.g. the Montague, Schenre, Lisimacus, etc.).
House Von Savoy
House Von Savoy hails from the forests and chilly areas north of the kingdom, assigned by the king to a familiar climate and entrusted with overwatch of Wyvern Passage, the only usable pass to cross the mountains. Mostly made up of creatures from the mountains and fields, such as satyrs, minotaurs, giants, centaurs and wood elves, they knew the land and proceeded to thrive with the native population, eventually integrating entirely. The House mostly managed agriculture in the north, and at one point made up a sizable chunk of the population.
During the War, the Von Savoy provided manpower and raw materials, and saw themselves assisting in the defense of the Passage when the Empire arrived at their doorstep. Since then, the Von Savoy have shifted their focus to industry, mostly mining, and live in large ranches and small villages at the foot of the mountains with a traditional, farming lifestyle. They are known to typically wear large brimmed hats to protect against the sun, and workplace attire such as boots and overalls. They are often ridiculed for their "hick," country accent.
Court of the Scroll
The Puffin family, main family of the Court of the Scroll, are a nomadic group of avians and birds. Assigned to the capital as messengers and teachers given their academic interests, they served as record keepers and clerical workers for the young kingdom, before establishing the Royal University and shifting their focus fully to academia and research.
During the War, the Puffin did not manage to provide as much as other families, instead using their knowledge to assist in production. Most important, however, is the pact signed with Deneir, First Scribe of Allois and lesser deity of knowledge, literature, and scholars. As the Empire drew closer, the Court of the Scroll awoke Deneir in the Central Royal Library and pleaded with him to defend the books contained there. Moved by the passion of the House, he devoted his will to the building. Paintings and images to this day remark how, even as other buildings were hit by bombs and shrapnel, the Central Library remained spotless.
The Court, sometimes referred to as Scroll Keepers, now inhabits a large fleet of airships and moves in the nation's borders. They typically dress in drab, neutral clothes and speak with an elegant, posh accent.
Ravencourt
Led by the Schaufkas family, the Ravencourt was originally tasked as the eyes and ears of the king, and gifted with the image of the raven to represent them. They worked as the kingdom's spies and closest consultants, but found an interest in the arts and academia. Whereas the Puffin represented science and progress, the Ravencourt represented the intimacy of art: "a poem written in the dead of night, a painting crafted with passion, a sculpture carved with a loving hand," as described by the House's scribes. Mostly made up of elves and other creatures typically considered as monstrous (driders, vampires and infernals).
During the War, the House found itself once more taking the role of the king's right hand, gathering intelligence, performing assassination missions, infiltrating enemy camps and sabotaging them. Unfortunately, due to the secrecy required, other Houses and most of the nation believes that their contribution was little: money and some manpower. Nowadays, the Ravencourt heavily promotes the arts: a grant from one of the many funds of the House is a prestigious gift for any artist in the kingdom.
The Ravencourt, if one can find them, is typically dressed in dark clothing and lives in gothic, dark homes. The Ravenhold, a large cathedral-like castle situated north-west of the valley and hanging over an enormous ravine, is the main seat of the Court.
The Sanguine Court
The Sanguine Court, the Lords of the Blade, the House of War. Lead by the Korzakov family, a long line of white-skinned goliaths, they once served as the warriors of Norelva. Encompassing strong races such as goliaths, orcs, giants, the Korzakov protected the kingdom's borders fiercely during its initial years of expansion, clashing with hostile fauna and clearing the way for settlements and villages. As time passed, their services became less needed, and many moved onto mercenary work or migrated elsewhere to maintain an active, wild lifestyle.
The War was their optimal chance to prove themselves, and indeed the Sanguine Court provided the most manpower and weapons to the kingdom, to the point that it was a common joke of the time to say that one in every five soldiers was a "Sanguiner." Their contribution was vital to the survival of Norelva, but it also proved devastating for their House: by the end of the war, it found itself at the risk of extinction, having lost up to 85% of its force, including heirs. Since then, the House has slowly rebuilt and has been attempting to adapt to civilian life.
Court of Crimson
Made up mostly of humans and other humanoid races, the Crimson Court was originally a group of farmers and fishermen tasked with controlling the sea south of the kingdom. Lead by the Jimenez family, they established ports and thrived by fishing and employing a pacifist, friendly attitude towards natives, fauna and even flora. As time progressed, they integrated mermaids and humanoid acquatic races in their House, slowly becoming masters of the sea. At one point, they even received the blessing of Mer, worm god of the sea, impressed by the House's care and respect for the water.
During the War, the Crimson Court spent almost their entire stocks of food, donating them to the frontlines, and waged the blessing of Mer to sink enemy ships and propel friendly ones. Although not directly involved in combat, their assistance was appreciated by sailors and soldiers, who could easily recognize the Court's contributions: they were always marked with a small heart on a rose's stem and always included words of encouragement and wishes for good luck. Nowadays, the Court occupies a small village on the coast and busies itself with fishing and farming, providing a sizable amount of the food consumed in the kingdom.
Moonhaven Court
The decadent Moonhaven Court originally did not exist in the kingdom's early stages. Once the nation evolved, however, the signs of civilization arose in the form of brothels and taverns, music-filled inns and red light districts. The Moonhaven Court takes its name from the night, when such debauchery could take place unnoticed. Founded by the Deschamps, a family cursed into tieflings, it vowed to keep those who worked in the night safe: sex workers, peddlers, rickety bards and all those that society turned away from. Eventually, the upturned moon became a symbol of safety for other nightly peoples, such as vampires and werewolves. Receptive to such care, taverns and inns either pledged fielty to the Court or sold to it entirely.
The War saw the House at a loss. There was little they could do, but they helped where possible in a strange symbiosis with the Crimson Court. The latter worked during the day, while the Deschamps worked at night, supporting the population's morale with alcohol, song and dance, and some relief from the horrors of the war. Now, the moon watches over Rotluss, a small town north of the kingdom crammed with casinos, brothels, bars and discos. The Moonhaven can easily be identified by the symbol, and the purple colors it represents itself with.
One notable detail of this Court is the blessing of the goddess of the moon, who showed the Deschamps family and the Court her appreciation via a miracle that occurred during the last days of the War. Since then, it is said that the moon shall protect all those that bear her mark.
