Winhold, officially The Federal Republic of Winhold, is a democratic nation located on the northern plateau of the eastern continent. The nation is bordered by Siwaken to the north-west, New Fromen to the west, Norelva to the south and Rokran to the south-east. Its capital is Hapstad, a city erected on a hilltop and built with traditional techniques. Winhold is a federal republic: the state is split into smaller states or municipalities, managed locally, and is overseen by the federal government. The citizens vote for both governments.
Winhold has a balanced, capitalist and heavily trade-based economy with a medium development index given its sometimes more traditional and conservative way of life. Winhold is mostly inhabited by humans and elves, the combination of which has merged the nation into a bureaucratic, complex state. Winhold has a pacifist foreign policy and has not participated in any wars. At its core, Winhold is an ancient nation grappling with innovation and progress and bound by old rules and precedents.
Winhold is currently struggling to modernize and faces a large outflow of young people and academics. It features in international relations, but mostly keeps to itself, and this is reinforced by its population, which is mostly made up of farmers, craftsmen and blue collar workers. Political life is slowed down by lengthy bureaucratic processes, checks and balances. Welfare is well regarded, and so are favorable policies, but the spread-out population makes it difficult to communicate and coordinate. Nevertheless, despite its difficulties and slow development, Winhold has remained essentially the only nation to have prospered, having been involved in no war or major conflict, and the citizens are widely considered carefree and welcoming in the major population centers (the isolated villages can be particularly rude and isolationist).
