While noble houses might only accomodate descendants and offspring, and political parties can be inaccessible to the average citizen, some organizations are open to Norelvans. These mostly have a specific purpose, such as civil rights advocacy, rallying around a certain cause or organizing like-minded people.
Despite being ancient, orders still exist. Some may have corrupted over time, while others remain active and well.
An order of young, adventurous men founded by a group of friends two centuries ago, who, in the past, embodied the dramatic, mythical persona of a knight. Clad in shining armor and riding great steeds, they traveled the lands and - albeit with a mediocre success rate - defended the innocent and upheld justice. The Knights of the Unicorn believed in an old tale, which remarked that the unicorn's nature is an illusion: it is mentioned that unicorns, although beautiful, peaceful creatures, are savage fighters when backed into a corner, and their horns are deadly weapons in addition to their magical nature.
The myth of Sir Drakan of Havrtal highlights the Order's nature: having intervened to save a caravan, he faced seven assailants, who mocked his sub-par armor. The story tells that despite Sir Drakan's fatal injuries, he killed all seven and accompanied the caravan to its destination, to then finally succumb to his injuries - only when the innocent had been assured safety.
Knights of the Old Blood, closely associated with the party of the same name, are an Order of nobles who used to serve the kingdom valiantly under the name of the Order of the King's Hand. When the king surrendered his power to the People's Council and High Chamber, and took a backseat in the kingdom's politics, the Order responded bitterly. In their eyes, this was a wrong move, a weak move, which put the power in the hands of career politicians and clueless party members. They preferred a strong ruler, who could take decisions quickly, and with his loss of power, they had nobody to serve.
Their leader, Lord Naemar the Red, publicly destroyed their old insignia, cut his palm open, and cried out that the Knights of the King's Hand had been declared "old blood, by now," and as such should be called so. Nowadays, they mostly act as guards for nobles who share their worldview and mercenaries.
The oldest, most revered Order, still honored by the king with a wing at his palace. The Knights of Norelva served King Elias Noret when the city was founded, stayed by the new king Evander when his father died, and silently protected the city as it expanded and grew out of their control. Only a few knights are still alive from when the Order was most active, subjects of endless legends and stories, old and wounded by now from their servitude. It is tradition not to choose a dragon for one's store logo or company symbol to honor the knights who served alongside these creatures, before their extinction.
These knights are the only people to have the honor of being buried in the Palace's graveyard, surrounding the mausoleum of the old king. Staying by his side still in death.
